Before you start studying with AI, know what's on your exam. Ask your:
Common exam topics for foreman advancement:
Open ChatGPT and use this as your starting prompt for any topic:
"I'm studying for my journeyman-to-foreman advancement exam. Start a study session on [topic]. First, give me a 3-sentence summary of the key concepts. Then quiz me with 5 questions at foreman exam difficulty. After I answer each question, tell me if I'm right, explain why, and give me the right answer if I was wrong. Ready when you are."
After ChatGPT gives you the 5 questions, answer them one at a time. After each answer, ChatGPT will explain what's right and wrong. If you're confused about an explanation, say "Explain that more simply" or "Give me an example from a distribution line job."
After a full quiz, ask:
"Which of those topics should I study more? Ask me 5 harder questions on my weakest area."
This builds competency exactly where you need it — not wasting time on topics you already know.
Ask ChatGPT to make you a study plan:
"I have 8 weeks before my foreman exam. Here are the topics I need to cover: [list]. Create a 2-sessions-per-week study plan with topic order and suggested session lengths."
Starting a study session:
"Study session: [topic]. 3-sentence summary, then quiz me with 5 questions at foreman exam level. Explain each answer."
Drilling a concept you don't understand:
"I'm confused about [concept]. Explain it like I'm a journeyman who understands line work but never studied [concept] formally. Use an analogy from utility work."
Practice calculations:
"Give me 3 fault current / load calculation practice problems at foreman exam level. Show the formula, then I'll try to solve them."
Simulating the exam:
"Give me a 20-question mixed exam covering OSHA 1910.269, transformer theory, and switching procedures. Time me and score me at the end."
Getting unstuck:
"I keep getting confused about [topic]. Ask me questions that start simple and get harder until I understand where I'm breaking down."
